Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) participated in the National Commemoration of 30 Years of Inclusive Education. The event was held at Patandi Secondary School in Arusha from September 16th to 20th 2024. At the event, the College was represented by the Head of the Special Education Unit, Ms. Mercy Hozza, and the Deputy Principal - Academic, Research and Consultancy, Dr. Christina Raphael.

During the event, the exhibitor showcased various activities carried out at DUCE. These activities include supporting students by transcribing and translating classwork, providing sign language interpretation, reading for students with visual impairments, taking notes for students with hearing impairments, and offering training in orientation, mobility, sports and games.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of State in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, emphasized the importance of identifying children with special needs in their communities to ensure they are recognized and can access their basic rights.

Similarly, The Director of Special Education Department at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Dr. Magreth Matonya, stated that the government has been promoting significant opportunities for children with special need ensuring that every child facing challenges receives all necessary basic services.

The Special Education Unit at DUCE is dedicated to support students with disabilities by implementing inclusive education practices. This unit ensures that students with special needs are integral members of the DUCE community. The Unit committed to create a conducive learning environment and providing tailored services to meet their specific needs.
