The Special Education Unit, in collaboration with the Tanzania League for the Blind and Tanzania Association of Deaf, organized a one-day training on how to handle people with disabilities at the College. The event took place recently at the College library.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Moses Ikupa, Head of the Diversity Unit, said that the DUCE community has a collective responsibility of taking care all people with disabilities, bearing in mind that this group requires inclusive working environment. She noted that both staff and students should be exposed to the best strategies of supporting individuals with disabilities.
Speaking during the training, the facilitator, Mr. Florence Chavala from the Tanzania League of the Blind, outlined several models for handling people with disabilities. Such modes include the medical model, the social model, and the bio-psychosocial model. He also identified various categories of disability, starting with visual impairment, followed by hearing impairment, albinism, intellectual disabilities, autism, and other hidden disabilities.
On the other hand, Ms. Rabia Abdallah from Tanzania Association of Deaf highlighted that when working with people with disabilities, the community should consider multiple of factors, such as accessibility, equal participation, social justice, and other universal requirements.
