International Nurses Day is celebrated each year on the 12th of May to commemorate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing.

Therefore, DUCE Health Centre joined the commemoration by recognizing a social reformer who was the foundational philosopher of modern nursing care. In addition, the team participated in providing health services such as testing for diseases including HIV, diabetes and blood pressure.

This year, the theme of International Nurses Day reminds the community to invest in nursing, respect rights, and protect health as per Swahili slogan, Wauguzi: sauti inayoongoza, wekeza katika uuguzi, heshimu haki na linda afya.

DUCE has continued putting more effort into promoting nurses, including providing greater access to further education opportunities. Educating women to be nurses gives professionals skills that benefit beyond the individual. The benefits cascade through their families and their communities. Educating nurses can also help achieve greater gender equity in health.

Nurses constitute the largest group of healthcare workers contributing to health promotion within communities. They educate patients and families, assist in self-management of illnesses at home, and provide care to newborns, children, adolescents, and adults.
