Dar es Salaam University Students’ Organization (DARUSO) held students’ Council elections on Wednesday, 14th May 2024 and Friday, 16th May 2024 in order to form a new students’ government for the year 2024/25.

Announcing the newly elected leaders, the Chairperson of the election committee, Ms. Happiness Israel Erney mentioned various posts that candidates contested for. These posts were chairpersons of Degree programmes and their secretaries, Faculty representatives, students with special needs representative and subject representatives. She further said the higher posts which had strong competition were President and Vice President positions.

On behalf of the election committee, the Chairperson announced the top DARUSO leaders, stating that Mr. Magesa Steven Marwa (BSc.Ed) emerged the champion for the Presidential position by scoring 989 votes out of 1632 total votes. On the other hand, Ms. Mbise Prisca Abel (BED Arts) won the Vice-Presidential post by scoring 962 votes. Other names of the elected leaders were announced and displayed on the noticeboard.

Correspondingly, Ms. Happiness Israel Erney said in order to complete the leadership circle, the upcoming election phase will involve voting for Speaker of students’ parliament, the Deputy speaker and the Students’ Parliament clerk.

On the other hand, the Chief Returning Officer, who is also the Dean of Students, Ms. Natu Msuya noted that election was free and fair, and the majority of students voted for their leaders while adhering to rules and regulations. She also said elections provide students with a unique opportunity to practise leadership, democracy and engage in social welfare activities. She further pointed out that the elected leaders should be good ambassadors in presenting the academic interests of students to higher authorities including the University Management, staff and the wider DUCE community.
