On Thursday 2nd September 2021 DUCE Staff participated in the fire safety training. The event was organized by Mashaka Malalo, the College Estate Manager with collaboration with Mr. Joseph Blass, the technical manager from Industrial Safety and General Mercantile Limited (ISGM).

ISGM is the international trade company and a supplier of fire protection products for preventing dangerous and costly fire. It is also an agent for training, fire products, fire detection and alarm systems. The company is dedicated to safeguarding life and property.

Mr. Blass, the facilitator of the training identified several causes of fire including smoking, rubbish burning, electrical fault, welding operations, careless handling and disposal of dangerous reactive chemical substances. Other causes are lightning, leakage of inflammable liquids or gases, spray painting, friction and other spontaneous courses.

He added ‘‘there are several portable fire extinguishers that are occasionally used to set off sources fire, including water fire extinguisher, dry powder fire extinguishers, foam fire extinguisher, carbon dioxide fire extinguisher and vaporizing liquid’’’ In his opinion, the dry power fire extinguisher is the most effective in controlling fire explosions.

Mr. Blass advised the College Administration to create a conducive environment at place work that would help to reduce the impact of the disaster by setting up equipment such as fire extinguishers and fire alarms.
