Prof. Bonaventure Rutinwa

BONAVENTURE.T.RUTINWA

Prof. Rutinwa is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam. He is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic and lecturer at the School of Law (Private Law Department). He joined the School (then Faculty of Law) in 1988. He holds a Bachelor of Laws LL.B (Hons) University of Dar es Salaam, 1987. Masters of Laws (LL.M in Labour Law and Human Rights) Queen’s University at Kingston, Canada, 1990. He further holds a Bachelor of Civil Law, BCL (Post Graduate Degree) University of Oxford, 1993. Postgraduate, University Certificate in Refugee and Humanitarian Studies, Refugee Studies Programme, University of Oxford, 1997. Moreover he holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in International Refugee Law, University of oxford, 1999.

Currently Prof. Rutinwa is DVC – Academic of University of Dar es Salaam. Before this position, Prof Rutinwa held several administrative positions within the University and the School of Law. He became Associate Professor of Law in 2004, he then was appointed Chairperson of the Legal Consultancy Committee of the University from 2004 – 2012. He has been Coordinator of the Centre for the Study of Forced Migration at the University from 1995 to 1997. He has also been Coordinator of International Migration Program at the University of Dar es Salaam 2007. He was the Convener of the University of Dar es Salaam Task Force for the Development of Training Academic Programs for the Training of Human Resources in the Sustainable Management of Oil and Gas Resources. Remarkably in 2012-2015 he served as Dean of the School of Law , University of Dar es Salaam.

  • Attorney General’s Prize, Awarded by the Attorney General of Tanzania, to the Best Final Year Student in the Faculty of Law.
  • Tanganyika Law Society Prize, Awarded by the Bar (Practicing Lawyers’ Society) of Tanzania to Final Year Student with Highest Marks in Civil Procedure.

1988-1990, CIDA/Queen’s University Award, Awarded by the Canadian Government and taken at Queen’s University at Kingston, Canada.

1991-1992, JCR Scholarship, Lincoln College, University of Oxford.

1995-1996, World Lutheran Federation Fellowship, taken as Visiting Fellow, Refugee Studies Programme, University of Oxford.

1996, Rhodes African Scholars Grant, Awarded by the Rhodes Chair Committee, University of Oxford (I was the first ever receipt when the awaed was introduced in 1996)

1996-1997, Ford Foundation Research Grant, (on humanitarian issues and capacity building in East Africa/Great Lakes region.

1998-1999, Wingate Scholarship, Awarded by the Harllord Wingate Foundation, London, to support compilation of Ph.D studies, University of Oxford.
