Mr. Abdallah Halfani Gonzi

Mr. Abdallah Halfani Gonzi is an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law and is posted at the Private Law Department. He started teaching undergraduate courses as a Tutorial Assistant in 2005. Mr.Gonzi holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B Hons.) 2004 and Master of Laws (LL.M) Degree (2006) both of the University of Dar es Salaam. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D in law with a focus on social security laws. Over his teaching career, Mr.Gonzi has been teaching various courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students such as Insurance Law, Administrative Law, Criminal law and procedure, Civil Procedure Law, Legal Method, Social Security Law, ADR and International Commercial Arbitration. In addition he has supervised research papers for LL.B, BALE and LL.M students. He has also participated in developing study materials for some undergraduate courses. He has acted as an external examiner for various higher learning institutions. He is one of the Judges of the Lex-Lead Essay Competition for developing countries whose headquarters are in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that annually examines essay competitions from law students in the developing countries on the role of law in economic development.

Mr.Gonzi is enrolled as a practicing Advocate and a member of the Tanganyika Law Society since 2010.

Mr.Gonzi has attended several professional trainings, presented papers in conferences and conducted consultancies. These include:

■ Team member in the 7-people Negotiation Team for renegotiating an international Contract between Tanzania Bureau of Standards and a Swiss-based Multinational Company on Installation of Importation Service Mark with traceability system, for Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) 2017/ 2018.

■ Chief Negotiator of the Negotiation Team representing the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) in negotiation of 2 employment cases between the TBS and its former employees, October 2017.

■ Participating in the Technical Experts Meeting on the Harmonization of Social Security Laws in East Africa, organized by Kituo cha Katiba in Kampala, 2011.

■ Participation in the 6-men team for the drafting of National Audit Regulations under the National Audit Act, 2008. The work was done in July 2008 for the office of the Controller and Auditor General of the Government.

■ Preparation and presentation of a paper titled ‘Viability of Customary Law as an ideal system for protection of Traditional Knowledge in Africa: the case study of Tanzania, a paper presented in the two- weeks training session of World Colloquium for teachers of Intellectual Property held  in Geneva, Switzerland, July 2010 organized by WIPO and WTO.

■ Attending a three weeks training at the International Law Institute (ILI-African Center for Legal Excellence) at Kampala Uganda on International Crimes of Money Laundering, Terrorism and trafficking in human and drugs in August 2008.

■ Attendance in a seminar on Project Management Skills and Techniques organized by the Open University of Tanzania in August 2007 in Morogoro.

■ Participating in the National Consultative Forum for Implementation of the ARIPO SWAKOPMUND PROTOCOL  ON PROTECTION OF TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, at Peacock Hotel, Dar es Salaam 2006.

■ Successful  completion of Advocacy skills training conducted by the British Council in Dar es Salaam in 2002- conducted by the British Council and the University of Dar es Salaam at Bahari Beach Hotel,DSM..

 

Apart from teaching, Mr.Abdallah Gonzi is also serving as the Coordinator for Moot Courts at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law since 2010 in which capacity he has been engaged in training students who participate in different moot court competitions in the name of the School and coordinating their participation. As such his roles involve training students on moot courts at the UDSoL, overseeing the selection process of the students who participate in the moots, organizing internal and national moots, preparing students selected in the competitions, sitting as a judge in the preliminary rounds of some of the competitions and presenting papers in some of the competitions which have a training component. In the discharge of these duties Mr.Gonzi has participated in many national, regional and international moot courts. Some of them are:

■Participating in the Jessup Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM in Washington DC, the U.S, April 2019.

■ Participating in the International Criminal Law  Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM in the Hague, Netherlands, June 2018.

■Participating in the Jessup Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM in Washington DC, the U.S, April 2014.

■Participating in the ELSA-WTO Moot Court Competition on international Trade Law as the Team Leader for UDSM in Grahams town, South Africa,  2016.

■ Participating in the Great Lakes Region  Moot Court Competition on international Criminal Law as the Team Leader for UDSM in Kigali, Rwanda,  2017.

■Participating in the Common Law Moot Court Competition on International Criminal Law as the Team Leader for UDSM in London, the U.K, April 2015.

■ Participating in the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM in Oxford, the U.K, April 2013.

■ Participating in the East African Region  Moot Court Competition on the law of the child as the Team Leader for UDSM in Nakuru, Kenya,  2013.

■Participating in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM, Cape Town, South Africa, September 2013.

■ Participating in the Jessup Cup Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader of UDSM at Washington D.C, the US in April 2012.

■Participating in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader for UDSM, Cotonou, Benin, October 2010.

■ Participating in the Law of the Child Moot Court Competition as the Team Leader of UDSM at Nairobi Kenya, October 2012.
