1. BACKGROUND
Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), in partnership with HELVETAS
Tanzania a Swiss Intercooperation, Kibabii University (KIBU) and the University of Juba
(UJ) is implementing a 30-month research project titled “Strengthening Teacher
Professional Development and Mentorship (STPDM)” in Tanzania, Kenya, and South
Sudan. The project is funded by IDRC-Canada in collaboration with the Global Partnership
for Education (GPE) under the Knowledge Innovation and Exchange (KIX) program. This
project aims to generate lessons on effective teacher mentorship and support models for
continuous professional development, build the capacity of teacher mentors and teachers
to improve classroom teaching and learning outcomes, and mobilize policy uptake of
teacher mentorship and support models for strengthening primary school teacher
capacity.
As part of this initiative, DUCE is offering two (2) partially funded PhD scholarships on a
competitive basis to highly deserving students. Applicants are expected to align their PhD
projects with the goals of the STPDM project, particularly by investigating innovative
approaches to teacher professional development, well-being, and agency, while
integrating ICT, life skills, and gender equity to enhance education quality and promote
sustainable teaching practices in East Africa.

Proposals from PhD students requesting the project research funds are due on 20th
January 2025 not later than 16:00 hours EAT. Successful candidates will be notified
through letters and/or email by 31st January 2025
