Structural and Construction Engineering provides structural and construction engineers capability of designing and constructing engineering projects...
The Department of Structural and Construction Engineering (SCE) was established in July 2009 after merging the former department of Structural Engineering and the department of Construction Technology and Management under the then Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) in the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), the first campus college of the University of Dar es Salaam.
SCE being among the Academic Departments in the College of Engineering and Technology, is involved in Educational and advanced training of engineers in the field of analysis, design, construction technology and management of civil engineering structures such as low and high-rise buildings, bridges, towers, underground structures, silos and fluid tanks among others. The department also conducts applied research and development in building materials, design, analysis, construction technology and management of structures and public procurement. The department provides professional services to the construction industry, government and other organizations.
The department has four (4) experienced and well qualified Civil engineering technicians who provide an important support to the department's academic and research activities. The technical staff assists in setting up experiments and demonstrations for the students, and conducting both laboratory and field tests for the construction industry.
The department has one (1) administrative staff member who provides support to the department in all administrative matters.
The department has structures and building materials laboratory, which is equipped with several machines for testing of various construction materials. These include machines for testing quality and strength of building materials. In addition, the laboratory possesses other machines for appraisal of existing structures. The equipment is used mainly for teaching purposes, but also made available for professional services to the construction industry.
Teaching and learning
Due to the unification of the Civil engineering related Degree Programmes, the department offers courses that contribute to the BSc. In Civil Engineering Degree Programme.
The department hosts two degree programmes of Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying.
Entry requirements to BSc. Degree (Direct Entry)
Applicants are required to have good Principal level passes in Mathematics and Physics. In addition, candidates should at least have a Subsidiary pass in Chemistry or Geography at Form VI level or a Credit pass in Chemistry at Form IV.
The department is running postgraduate programmes at Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), MSc. and PhD. degree levels as follows:
The postgraduate diploma is delivered under course-work mode. The MSc. (Eng) programmes are being delivered under two modes, a coursework plus dissertation mode and a thesis mode. The PhD. programmes are exclusively delivered through a thesis mode. The department also undertakes Postgraduate training by a sandwich mode, whereby a student may study a part of the course in another university.
The department offers all the postgraduate courses also in part-time mode for engineers who cannot afford to stay for a longer period away from their duties. Similarly, the department offers evening classes for the postgraduate courses.
Professional Development Programme
Professional needs of the engineering community for continuing education, through tailor-made courses, are fulfilled in the department by conducting professional development programmes (PDP). Among others, the department conducts PDP courses on the use softwares in structural design and project management, contract management and public procurement.
Research and Publication
Research at the department is aimed at addressing engineering technology and management issues confronting our society. Some of the recent researches are:
Consultancy and Services
The department provides consultancy services to the industry mostly by conducting quality control tests on construction materials, expert advice in construction technology and management and public procurement. Further, a considerable number of consultancies have involved structural design and supervision of new of new construction works. These include design of the Computing Centre, the University of Dar es Salaam Business School (former faculty of commerce), Mining, Transportation, Education, Heritage, Aquatics Sciences and Multi – Science Complex buildings at the University of Dar es salaam. The other major consultancy activities has been the appraisal of existing structure. In addition, the department has been engaged by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) to prepare various procurement guidelines and standard tendering documents under the Public Procurement Act.
