College Background
The College of Engineering and Technology (CoET) originates from the then Faculty of Engineering (FoE), which was established at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 1973 with the support of the Government of the Federal Republic of German through the then technical cooperation agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) following a cooperation agreement between the governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and Federal Republic of Germany in 1971. FoE was established to fulfill the following three objectives: (i) to provide education and advanced training for engineers; (2) to perform research in the interest of exploitation of natural resources; and (iii) to provide expert professional services to industry, government and private organizations.
Initially there existed only three departments of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering until 1978/79 when the fourth Department of Chemical and Process Engineering was established with the assistance from the Norwegian and Swiss governments.
In order to maintain strong relations with the industry, the Office for Relations with the Industry (ORI) was established followed by the Committee for Relations with Industry (CORI). For further enhancement of the link between FoE and the Tanzanian Industry and thereby assist the FoE in transferring its products and services to industry, the Institute for Production Innovation (IPI) was established in 1979.
IPI was established to cultivate and enhance innovation; and to develop and transfer technologies. It was a Centre for transforming results of research done at FoE to useful products, processes and services for our society. The main focus of IPI was development of appropriate technologies applicable in rural areas in the fields like
The College of Engineering and Technology (CoET) is a Campus College of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). It started operating in December 2001 as a prospective College of the UDSM and was formally established as the first fully fledged Campus College on 29th September 2005 following Gazetting of the effective date of the Universities Act vide Government Notice No. 260 published on 2nd September 2005. The College was then inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, on 13th April, 2006.
The College plays a vital role in the higher education sector in Tanzania, serving a wider range of Tanzanians who are receiving its services. CoET reckons that globalization and other challenges which face Africa, like poverty and environmental degradation, must be confronted with a well-educated and trained society equipped with high-level know-how and technical skills.
