Biography

Dr Armstrong Clement Matogwa 

Armstrong Clement Matogwa is a sociologist and a researcher with more than 15 years’ experience; currently working at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology – University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is specialized in the sociology of knowledge, social research, political economy, rural and urban sociology as well as industrial sociology. He did his PhD (Sociology) on The Sociology of knowledge specifically on the status of both formal and informal knowledge in Third World countries. In research and consultancy, Armstrong has vast experience on knowledge systems (both formal and indigenous e.g. schooling, religion, witchcraft, traditional beliefs etc.), social protection, public health issues, projects evaluation, stakeholder engagement and Social Impact Assessment.

Reducing the Harm Caused by Witchcraft Beliefs and Witch-hunting in Tanzania

 

Objectives of the project; -

 

  • To expound on the concept of witchcraft beliefs, practices and consequences arising thereof
  • To describe the phenomenon of witch-hunting and killing of witch suspects
  • To engage state and non-state actors on strategic interventions to reduce the killing of witch suspects.
  • To involve and raise awareness among duty bearers, upholders and defenders of civil and human rights about the falsity of antiquarian witchcraft beliefs and practices in order to reduce/prevent violence based on witchcraft beliefs.
  • To educate and enlighten on misconceptions that drive witch persecution through trainings, workshops and seminars for various interest groups.

 

Outcomes; -

  • Reduction of the killing of witch suspects in Tanzania.
  • Reduction/prevention of violence based on witchcraft beliefs and practices.
  • Raising of understanding on social and economic effects of witchcraft violence.
  • Development of a model course on witchcraft and its consequences.
  • Production of teaching materials on witchcraft violence against elders and women.
