The University of Dar es Salaam has marked a historic milestone as the Tanzania Journal of Science (TJS) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a high-level scientific conference, reaffirming its pivotal role in advancing research, innovation, and national development.

Officiating the golden jubilee on behalf of the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Daniel Mushi described the milestone as a testament to resilience, commitment, and sustained excellence in scientific publishing.

He noted that over the past five decades, the journal has evolved into a respected platform for high-quality research in natural and applied sciences, contributing significantly to both national development and the global scientific community.

“Science remains a powerful driver of national transformation. It supports innovation, informs policy decisions, and strengthens key sectors of the economy. Platforms like the Tanzania Journal of Science are essential in promoting locally relevant research and amplifying the voices of Tanzanian scientists”, he said.

He further underscored the relevance of the conference theme, “Natural and Applied Sciences: Future Perspectives for Industrial and Societal Development,” noting its alignment with Tanzania’s long-term development agenda and the urgent need to leverage science and technology to address challenges such as food security, environmental sustainability, health systems, and climate resilience.

UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, described the golden jubilee as a moment of pride and reflection for both the University and the wider scientific community. He highlighted that the journal’s 50-year journey reflects a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of knowledge.

“For five decades, the Tanzania Journal of Science has provided a credible platform for researchers to share findings, exchange ideas, and contribute to national and global scientific discourse,” he said.

Prof. Anangisye emphasized the critical role of science in addressing societal challenges, noting that the journal has been instrumental in fostering collaboration and innovation in key sectors such as health, agriculture, environment, and technology.

He also commended the editorial team and contributors for maintaining high standards, while encouraging emerging researchers to uphold integrity and pursue impactful scholarship.

Strengthening scientific collaboration and showcasing research

Representing the Principal of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS), Prof. Flora Magige, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Steven Nyandoro highlighted the significance of the conference in strengthening scientific collaboration and showcasing research that responds to real-world challenges.

“This conference demonstrates our continued commitment to advancing science and creating platforms that connect research with development,” he noted, adding that CoNAS remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that translate knowledge into practical solutions.

Delivering a reflective account of the journal’s journey, Chief Editor Prof. Evelyne I. Mbede described the golden jubilee as a historic celebration of African scholarship and scientific progress. She noted that since its establishment in 1975, TJS has remained committed to bridging scientific rigor with societal needs.

“This milestone is not merely a celebration of longevity, but a testament to resilience, dedication, and the enduring pursuit of truth within the scientific community,” she said.

Prof. Mbede highlighted the journal’s transformation from a modest publication into an internationally recognized platform spanning diverse disciplines, including biological and physical sciences, computational studies, and environmental engineering.

She acknowledged the contributions of past editors, scholars, and institutions, while calling for continued collaboration to expand the frontiers of research and innovation.

The conference brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, development partners, and students, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing science.

Discussions covered critical areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, health, biodiversity conservation, biotechnology, and computational sciences, demonstrating the breadth and relevance of research published by TJS.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of the journal’s editors, who were awarded trophies in appreciation of their dedication and contributions over the years. The milestone was widely celebrated as a collective achievement of the University, the editorial team, contributors, and key partners such as the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology.

As the celebrations continue, the second day of the conference explores themes including the evolution of the scientific research environment, natural resources and climate change, agriculture and food security, business and management, and product value development.

The golden jubilee has urged stakeholders to ensure that research translates into practical solutions that benefit society and accelerate Tanzania’s sustainable development goals, cementing the Tanzania Journal of Science as a cornerstone of the country’s research ecosystem and a catalyst for future innovation.
