I am a consultant ophthalmologist, lecturer, and public health researcher with over eight years of progressive experience in clinical ophthalmology, eye health systems strengthening, and implementation research in Tanzania and the wider East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSA) region. My professional journey began as a Medical Doctor and evolved through residency and fellowship training, culminating in specialist and consultant roles across tertiary hospitals, research institutions, and academic settings. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to the prevention of avoidable blindness and the delivery of equitable, high-quality eye care services in undeserved populations
My clinical and research work has focused on priority public eye health challenges, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), leprosy-related eye disease, HIV-associated ocular surface malignancies, and cataract blindness. I have led and contributed to several research projects, with findings presented at regional and international scientific meetings in Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda, and published in reputable peer-reviewed journals. Notably, I have championed telemedicine-based ROP screening models, demonstrating their feasibility and relevance in low-resource settings, and advocating for their integration into national newborn care systems
In addition to research, I have extensive experience in program implementation and technical leadership. I have managed large-scale cataract outreach programs, provided national technical supervision for Trachoma elimination activities, and supported the integration of eye health into primary healthcare services. My work emphasizes sustainability, quality assurance, and health system integration, ensuring that donor-supported interventions strengthen national systems rather than operate as parallel structure
