Biography

Architect Mariam Marco Madundo is an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, specializing in Architecture since 2020 within the Department of Structural and Construction Engineering at the College of Engineering and Technology-COET. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Ardhi University-Tanzania in 2015 and MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development from University College London(UCL)-UK in 2023.

 

A registered architect with the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board-AQRB and a Corporate Member of the Architects Association of Tanzania-MAAT, she has worked on public architectural projects and master plans. Her undergraduate research contributed to the New Dar es Salaam City Master Plan (2016–2036), and her dissertation on Architectural analysis of road junctions in CBD-Dar es Salaam won the Horsens Polytechnic Prize and the Architects Association of Tanzania Prize.

 

She has attended international professional development programs, including the Building Design and Engineering Approaches to Airborne Infection Control Course (AICC) at Harvard Medical School USA and various housing and sustainability workshops across Africa. Her master’s research examined informal settlement dynamics in Mwanza City. Her research interests focus on housing, urban design, sustainability, and environmental policymaking. Through her studies and experience, she remains dedicated to developing sustainable urban environments.

 

Research Interest

Her research interests lie in housing, urban design, sustainability, and environmental policy-making. Her master’s research focused on the interaction between settlement dynamics and infrastructure provision in informal settlements.

Mariam has done research project during her undergraduate studies titled: “Architectural Analysis of Road Junctions based on Social, Economic and Environmental Aspects, the Case of Dar es Salaam- Downtown Area”. Her dissertation research work won several prizes and has input into the New Dar es Salaam City Master Plan (2016-2036), the National project she participated in its preparation and specifically setting Guidelines to Urban Shapers on how to plan and design buildings at the road junctions.

Arch Mariam has been awarded the Ardhi University Prize, Horsens Polytechnic Prize and the Architects Association of Tanzania (AAT) Prize for being the best in undergraduate degree examinations with the best dissertation research and design studio project in the school of architecture and design at ARU.
