Abubakary Mjata is an experienced aquaculture specialist, educator, and entrepreneur dedicated to advancing sustainable seafood production. Currently serving as a Tutorial Assistant at the University of Dar es Salaam, he plays a crucial role in training and mentoring future aquaculture professionals.
With over three years of hands-on experience in fish farming, he has worked as a fish farm manager at Buzirayombo Fish Farms and Tanganyika Aquahub, gaining extensive knowledge in modern aquaculture practices. As a strong advocate for Cage farming, he is committed to enhancing the blue economy in Tanzania through innovative and sustainable mariculture methods.
To further academic and professional growth, he is to purse MSc program in Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries, with a focus on aquatic health, sustainable fisheries, and advanced aquaculture systems.
Through research, education, and business initiatives, Abubakary continues to make a lasting impact on Tanzania’s aquaculture industry and the broader blue economy.
Abubakary’s research interests focus on sustainable aquaculture systems, particularly the application of Biofloc and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to enhance fish production while minimizing environmental impact. With the increasing global demand for seafood, there is a critical need for innovative farming techniques that improve productivity, biosecurity, and resource efficiency. He is particularly interested in optimizing water quality management, microbial dynamics, and nutrient recycling within closed-loop systems to support the growth of economically important fish species. Additionally, research on feed formulation using locally available ingredients aims to reduce dependence on expensive commercial feeds, thereby promoting cost-effective and sustainable fish farming practices.
Another key research interest is aquatic animal health and disease management, focusing on the prevention and control of infectious diseases in farmed fish populations. With experience in fish farming at Buzirayombo Fish Farm and Tanganyika Aquahub, he has witnessed the challenges posed by pathogens and environmental stressors on aquaculture productivity. Research in this area involves studying host-pathogen interactions, developing probiotic and herbal-based treatments, and implementing best management practices to reduce antibiotic use and improve fish immunity. By integrating sustainable health management strategies with advanced farming technologies, He aims to contribute to the resilience and expansion of Tanzania’s aquaculture sector while supporting the broader goals of the blue economy.
