Dr. Leonard Binamungu secures Landmark Consultancy in ICT Curriculum Development

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is celebrating the outstanding achievement of Dr. Leonard Peter Binamungu from the College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT), who has secured the largest consultancy funding for the April–June 2025 quarter, amounting to Tanzanian Shillings 550,205,000/=.
According to information from the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor–Research, this substantial consultancy enables Dr. Binamungu, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at CoICT, to lead the development of demand-driven curricula for the Digital Tanzania Institute.
“This curriculum is intended to ensure that Tanzania’s next generation of ICT professionals are equipped with market-relevant skills, poised to foster innovation, enhance employability, and accelerate the country’s digital transformation in both local and global spheres,” reads the statement.
Prof. Nelson Boniface, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research, applauded the achievement and emphasised the broader impact: “Dr. Binamungu’s success is a clear demonstration of the high-calibre expertise we have at UDSM and the kind of global and community impact our staff can achieve”.
“We encourage our academic and research staff to pursue large-scale consultancies and research projects that not only secure significant funding but also address pressing societal needs locally and internationally”, said Prof. Boniface.
Remarkable Contribution to Tanzania’s Digital Future
Dr. Binamungu, who also serves as Research Grant Coordinator at UDSM and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, UK, underscored the importance of the consultancy.
“This is more than just a contract; it is a chance to contribute to Tanzania’s digital future. By shaping curricula that match market demands, we are helping to build a workforce ready for the challenges and opportunities of the digital era. I am grateful to UDSM for providing an enabling environment that makes such impactful projects possible”, he said.
Dr. Binamungu’s scholarship spans Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computing Education, Digital Transformation for Development (DX4D), and ICT for Development (ICT4D), with a strong focus on applications in the developing world.
His landmark contributions include national digital health infrastructure development, ICT curricula design, and the creation of training materials across multiple education levels in Tanzania.
