Two female UDSM graduates scoop top honour at Pre-International Women’s Day Conference

The University of Dar es Salaam beams with pride as two of its outstanding graduates, Angela Anselim Kiseku and Astrid Mushemba, were honoured at the prestigious international Pre-International Women’s Day Annual Very Important Persons conference as the best female students in their respective fields.

The two graduates were crowned for their exceptional achievements in their final year of their Bachelor studies in Petroleum Engineering and Geology. The event took place in Dar es Salaam on March 8, 2025 and was graced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko.

Dr. Elisante Mshiu, Dean of the School of Mines and Geosciences at the University of Dar es Salaam, expressed immense pride in the two awardees, attributing their success to the University’s commitment to academic excellence and empowerment of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“Angela and Astrid have exemplified the highest standards of dedication and excellence in their studies. Their recognition on this international platform is a testament to their hard work and to the quality of education we provide at the University of Dar es Salaam,” said Dr. Mshiu.

He added, “We are extremely proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing them make significant contributions to the industry.”

The Pre-IWD conference is a non-profit event founded by Ecograf Limited and Azurite Management & Consultancy Limited led by Christer Mhingo to celebrate Tanzanian women. The one-week event prior to International Women’s Day in honour and support of Her Excellency, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Angela Anselim Kiseku – a journey of perseverance and passion

Angela Anselim Kiseku, who recently graduated (2023/24) at UDSM with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering degree, describes her journey as one marked by perseverance and passion.

A former student of Feza Girls High School and Canossa Girls Secondary School, Angela has continuously defied expectations in this traditionally male-dominated field. Her commitment to academic excellence earned her the Best Female Student Award in Petroleum Engineering. 

She is now poised to bridge the financial sector with the petroleum industry through her role as a Management Trainee at NMB Bank PLC.

"I honestly never thought I would reach such a milestone. Receiving this award was a mix of shock, disbelief and deep appreciation for the hard work that went into achieving it. This award proves the power of perseverance, passion and breaking barriers as women in STEM. The sky is truly the limit,” said Angela.

She also acknowledged the support she received throughout her journey. “I am deeply grateful to the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Sciences for their continuous support. Special thanks to Eng. Hussein Chitemo from M&P, who played a key role in my final year project, and to my parents, who always encouraged me to aim high.”

Astrid Mushemba – a testament to resilience and passion for Geology

For Astrid Mushemba, a recent Bachelor of Science in Geology graduate at UDSM (2023/24), being recognized as the Best Female Student in Geology reflects her resilience and deep passion for the field.

She attributes her success to years of hard work, unwavering support from the School of Mines and Geosciences and encouragement from her peers. Astrid’s achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also serves as an inspiration for young women aspiring to venture into geology.

"This award is more than a personal achievement; it honours the women who paved the way in geology and inspires the next generation. It symbolizes the power of all women in geology who came before me and those who will follow,” said Mushemba.

She also recognized the role of her department and mentors in her success. “I am profoundly grateful to the lecturers at the School of Mines and Geosciences for their unwavering support throughout my Bachelor’s degree journey. Their consistent guidance and encouragement have been instrumental in my academic growth.”

A prestigious opportunity in Finland

As part of their recognition, both Angela and Astrid have been awarded a two-week training programme in Finland, sponsored by GTK (Geological Survey of Finland) and Mining Finland

This prestigious opportunity will provide them with hands-on experience, exposure to cutting-edge industry practices and the chance to network with global experts in their respective fields.

Inspiring the next generation

The success of Angela and Astrid marks a significant milestone for the University of Dar es Salaam, reinforcing its reputation as a center for academic excellence in STEM.

Their achievements send a powerful message to young women across Tanzania and beyond—that with determination, hard work and a strong support system, they too can excel in STEM fields.
