The University of Dar es Salaam has reaffirmed its standing as a leader in legal education after its School of Law emerged the overall champion of the 2025 Green Law Africa Initiative Moot Court Competition, held at Mzumbe University in Morogoro from 9 to 10 October 2025.

Competing under the theme “Transboundary Environmental Harm and State Responsibility: Strengthening Legal Accountability for a Sustainable Africa,” the UDSM team, comprising Cwen Nasienza Mugaragu, Roselyn Erick Msami, and Aida Omary, demonstrated exceptional legal skill and depth of analysis to secure both the championship title and the Best Respondent Memorial Award.

The award for Best Respondent Memorial, given to the team with the strongest legal reasoning, research depth, and persuasive argumentation, reinforced UDSM’s longstanding tradition of academic and professional excellence in environmental and international law.

Dean of the UDSM School of Law, Dr. Musa Laurean, commended the students for their outstanding performance and professionalism.

“This victory is a testament to our students’ intellectual depth and resilience. It reflects UDSM’s leadership in legal scholarship and our commitment to advancing sustainability, justice, and responsible governance across Africa”, said Dr. Laurean.

The Green Law Africa Initiative Moot Court Competition brought together top law students from seven leading universities across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, challenging participants to apply theoretical knowledge to complex real-world cases on environmental harm and state responsibility.

Experiential legal education

Echoing the Dean’s remarks, Dr. Petro Protas, Coordinator of the Moot Court Committee at the UDSM School of Law, praised the team’s dedication and intellectual discipline.

“Our students’ performance embodies the essence of experiential legal education. Through platforms like this, we are producing graduates who are not only legally competent but also socially responsible and globally aware”, said Dr. Protas.

Representing the winning team, Aida Omary described the experience as both challenging and transformative. “We learned to think critically, argue persuasively, and connect the law to real environmental challenges. We are truly grateful to our mentors, especially Dr. Protas, for their guidance and belief in us”.

The Green Law Africa Initiative Moot Court has become a leading regional platform for future legal practitioners to engage with contemporary environmental and transboundary justice issues.

Director of Student Services, Ms. Paulina Mabuga, congratulated the champions and the entire Moot Court Committee, noting that their achievement reflects the university’s enduring legacy of academic distinction and societal impact.

Through its vibrant moot court culture, the UDSM School of Law continues to advance the university’s Vision 2061, aligning its pursuit of academic and professional excellence with Tanzania’s Vision 2050 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The school remains steadfast in nurturing a new generation of legal minds dedicated to building a sustainable, just, and prosperous Africa.
