As Zanzibar prepares for the 2025 General Elections, the Second Vice President, H.E. Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, has underscored the critical need for disseminating accurate and timely information to citizens regarding key development projects implemented by both the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
Speaking at the opening of the 20th Government Communication Officers' Workshop on 3rd April 2025, at the New Aman Complex in Zanzibar, H.E. Abdulla called on public communication officers to fulfill their essential role in ensuring that the public is well-informed and empowered to make sound decisions in the upcoming elections.
The workshop also featured insightful remarks from Hon. Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, and Hon. Anna Makinda, Commissioner of the 2022 Population and Housing Census. Both leaders urged Government Communication Officers to uphold professionalism, embrace continuous learning and pursue career development.
Hon. Prof. Kabudi emphasized the significance of the meeting, which covered a range of crucial topics, including media coverage of elections, media and communication ethics and the evolving role of public relations in governance.
Meanwhile, Hon. Makinda encouraged participants to cultivate a passion for knowledge and lifelong learning. “Your effectiveness in informing the public depends on your commitment to professional growth,” she stated.
Representing the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) at the workshop were Dr. Dotto Paul Kuhenga, Head of the Communication and Marketing Unit and Ms. Zamda George, Public Relations Officer. Their participation underscored UDSM’s dedication to enhancing strategic communication and strengthening stakeholder engagement.
UDSM implementing institutional reforms
“This workshop is timely. As a university, we are implementing major institutional reforms and projects that demand effective communication strategies. Learning from national best practices and aligning with government communication priorities positions UDSM as a responsive, people-centered institution,” said Dr. Kuhenga.
Ms. George added that the sessions provided valuable insights into government messaging frameworks, stakeholder management and the integration of development communication with institutional branding.
“We are taking home practical tools and renewed motivation. This will be reflected in how we communicate the university’s achievements, engage with our audiences, and enhance internal coordination within our unit,” she remarked.
By actively participating in the national dialogue on public communication, UDSM not only contributes to broader discussions on transparency and development but also reinforces its role as a leader in education, innovation and institutional communication.
