Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies is a three-year programme aims to provide interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary training that aims to produce competent graduates with holistic knowledge and skills, able to analyse and interpret development theories and processes. It equips students with the capability to interrogate, formulate and effectively manage sustainable development plans and policies, while challenging them to be ethical, competent citizens who can create their own welfare, but also take care of the common good in promoting a developing just society.

Development Perspectives I and Development Perspectives II are mandatory courses for all first-year students at the University of Dar es Salaam. They offered in the first semester (Development Perspectives I) and second semester (Development Perspectives II).
 

The doctoral program by thesis at IDS is a full-time course of study, taking three years post-MA degree. The program of PhD study at IDS leading to the doctoral degree is organized to attain the following objectives:

Master of Arts in Gender Studies at the Institute of Development Studies which is an interdisciplinary program of 18 months (offered as taught and by thesis). It aims to produce graduates in the field of Gender and Development capable of handling complex social, economic, political, legal and cultural issues that require gender insights and to meet up labour market’s needs in the country and beyond.

Master of Arts in Development Management is 18 months program offered as taught and by thesis. It aims to provide understanding of development by addressing the growing international, national and local manpower needs in planning, designing, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development plans, policies, programmes and projects. It is intended to impart knowledge and skills for translating into reality and implementing international and national policies and plans such as different national development plans, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This 18 months master’s program offered as taught and by thesis provides an in-depth understanding of development process including various theories, practice as well as global and national policies. In recent years there has been a growing demand for this degree programme as it provides specialised knowledge and skills to analyse development processes.
