Dr. Edith Barnabas Lyimo is a Senior Lecturer and the former Head of Department in the Department of Literature, Communication, and Publishing, Institute of Kiswahili Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. Edith is a multidisciplinary academician. She holds a PhD degree in Kiswahili Literature on children literature; MA Linguistics (Kiswahili and English); and BA with Education (majored in Kiswahili and Literature). While in her PhD thesis she focused on discourses of gender stereotypes in children’s reading materials, in her MA dissertation she focused on reiteration in literary texts.  

Before the introduction of Kiswahili children’s literature course in 2012 at the  University of Dar es Salaam, Edith used to teach Phonology, Morphology, Stylistics, oral literature, and poetry to undergraduate students.  Dr. Edith is now teaching undergraduate and post graduate courses which are: Kiswahili children’s literature, Kiswahili literature and gender (in undergraduate); and research methods, postgraduate seminars (in postgraduate).  Also she is among the experienced teachers and facilitators in teaching Kiswahili and culture to foreigners of all levels (children and adults).

Apart from teaching, Dr. Edith has been supervising postgraduate students in their theses and dissertations (MA and PhD). She is also serving as the External Examiner, paper reviewer, editor and a translator (English-Kiswahili). Beside these responsibilities, Edith authored various peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters and a book. In social arena, Dr. Edith is a wife and a mother.
