Dr. Zainab Jamidu Katima is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, teaching undergraduate and masters programs at the University of Dar es Salaam’s College of Engineering and Technology (CoET). With over 18 years of experience in academia and consultancy, she specializes in environmental management, atmospheric chemistry, and pollution abatement.
Dr Katima holds a PhD in Environmental Management at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), South Africa (2019), a VLIR UOS scholarship on master’s in environmental sanitation at Ghent University, Belgium (2008). She completed her program in 2010 and was awarded the Arcelor Mittal Best Master’s Dissertation Award.
Dr. Katima is also a Consulting Environmental Expert registered by the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) as well as the Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA), Tanzania.
Dr. Katima is an author and co-author of several scientific publications as well as presentations at local and international conferences. In 2017, she was awarded the Otto Hutzinger student presentation award at the DIOXIN 2017 conference in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Katima was also among the Atmospheric Chemistry Colloquium for Emerging Senior Scientists (ACCESS XV) participants at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, 2019.
Dr. Katima is also the newly elected Institute of Engineers Women Chapter Chairperson (2026/27) and a council member of the Institute of Engineers Tanzania (IET). She is also a member of other organizations, including the Institute of Directors (IoDT), the Tanzania Environmental Experts Association (TEEA), and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Tanzania National Chapter. Dr. Katima is also a graduate of the Female Future Tanzania program, Cohort 11.
Lastly, Dr. Katima is also a Member of the National Carbon Monitoring Centre working group under the Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU).
