Biography

Simon Yohana Shimwela is a Tanzanian academician and educational psychologist currently serving as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Educational Psychology and Curriculum Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. He was born on 25 May 1991 in Itumba Ward, Ileje District, Songwe Region, Tanzania.

Mr. Shimwela began his formal education at Nyerere Primary School (2000- 2006). He then pursued his Ordinary Level Secondary Education at Ileje Secondary School from 2007 to 2010, followed by Advanced Level Secondary Education at Kisimiri High School from 2011 to 2013.

In 2013, he joined the University of Dar es Salaam, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Psychology (2013–2016). He later obtained a Master of Arts in Education (2020-2023) from the same university. His academic training has provided him with strong foundations in educational psychology, curriculum studies, student development, counselling, early childhood education and comparative Education.

Professionally, Mr. Shimwela began his career as a secondary school teacher at Embeko Lutheran Secondary School (2016-2019), an institution owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, Dodoma Diocese. During this period, he developed extensive experience in teaching, student mentorship, and academic guidance reaching to the senior position of Principal Academic Coordinator of the School.

In 2019, he joined the University of Dar es Salaam under the Office of the Dean of Students, where he served as a Hall Warden and Social Welfare Officer until 2024. In this role, he was responsible for coordinating student welfare services, managing residential life, supporting student counselling initiatives, and promoting students’ social and academic well-being.

In 2025, Mr. Shimwela was recategorized to an academic position and appointed as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Educational Psychology and Curriculum Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. His responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, conducting research, supervising students in teaching practice, and participating in community engagement activities. His academic interests include educational psychology, curriculum development, student affairs, counselling, early childhood education and comparative Education.

In addition to his academic and administrative experience, Mr. Shimwela possesses strong computer literacy skills. He is knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint, which he effectively utilizes for academic writing, data analysis, instructional preparation, research documentation, and professional presentations.

Mr. Shimwela remains committed to advancing quality education through teaching, research, and student-centred support services.
