UDSM Makes Legal History as UDSoL Produces First First-Class LLB in 32 Years
The University of Dar es Salaam has marked a historic academic milestone as the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law (UDSoL), formerly the Faculty of Law, Kitivo cha Sheria, celebrated 71 Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and 14 Bachelor of Arts in Law Enforcement (BALE) graduates.
For the first time in 32 years, UDSoL produced a First-Class LLB graduate, Ms. Mary Barney Laseko, a breakthrough achievement announced during the 55th Graduation Ceremony (Third Cluster) held at Mlimani City, Dar es Salaam. The UDSM Chancellor and Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, publicly congratulated Ms. Laseko, praising her performance as proof of dedication, discipline, and the great potential of Tanzanian youth, and as renewed hope for the future of the legal profession and education in the country.
“I have always been focused on building a clear and purposeful path in the legal profession, and I am grateful that this commitment has not only shaped my journey but also enabled me to break a long-standing record along the way. It is an achievement that inspires me to aim even higher.” — Ms. Mary Barney Laseko
Ms. Laseko’s success adds a new chapter to UDSoL’s legacy, following in the footsteps of Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, the first woman to attain a First-Class in Law and now Secretary General of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
This year’s 3rd Cluster UDSM graduation saw 2,452 graduates conferred with various degrees and diplomas, 56.6 percent (1,386) of whom were women, underscoring the rising leadership of women in higher education. Ms. Laseko’s record-breaking feat continues to draw praise from legal, education, and youth development stakeholders, who say her journey has inspired many and further elevated the profile of legal education in Tanzania.
