Government Chief Chemist Calls on UDSM to Deepen Practical, Industry-Driven Learning

By Selemani Nambimbi,CMU

The Government Chief Chemist, Dr. Fidelice Mafumiko, has urged the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) to continue strengthening practical, hands-on and industry-oriented learning to produce graduates equipped with the skills and competencies needed to address real-world challenges and meet the demands of the labour market.

Speaking during a visit to the UDSM exhibition pavilion at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, on July 6, 2026, Dr. Mafumiko underscored the importance of bridging classroom instruction with field experience, saying higher education must increasingly focus on application-based learning alongside theoretical knowledge.

“One important aspect is ensuring that what students learn in the classroom is closely connected to field practice. I believe the ongoing curriculum reforms have taken into account the need for education that is practical, relevant and application-oriented,” Dr. Mafumiko said.

The Government Chief Chemist also praised UDSM for its continued growth in teaching, research and innovation, singling out the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) and the Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE)—where he previously served as a lecturer—for their significant contribution to academic excellence and the development of highly skilled professionals.

Reflecting on his long-standing association with the University, Dr. Mafumiko noted that UDSM has remained at the forefront of producing graduates and research that respond to national development priorities.

“It is encouraging to see how the University has continued to evolve by strengthening research, improving teaching and embracing innovations that have a direct impact on society,” he said.

Dr. Mafumiko further highlighted research collaboration as one of the strongest areas of partnership between the Government Chemist Laboratory Authority (GCLA) and UDSM. He explained that the Authority has been supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking research in chemistry, food science and related disciplines by providing access to advanced analytical laboratory facilities that enhance the quality and credibility of their research findings.

He added that the Authority is committed to broadening collaboration with the University through joint research, professional training and public awareness programmes aimed at promoting the safe and responsible use of chemicals across different sectors of the economy.

The University of Dar es Salaam continues to champion competency-based, solution-oriented education that integrates academic excellence with practical experience. Through continuous curriculum enhancement, strategic partnerships with industry and public institutions, experiential learning opportunities and impactful research, UDSM remains committed to producing graduates with the knowledge, skills and innovation required to drive sustainable national development and respond effectively to emerging local and global challenges.
