History Background - PSE

1.    INTRODUCTION

The department of Petroleum Science and Engineering was established in 2020 with the following main objectives:

  • To provide undergraduate and postgraduate education related to oil and gas industry
  • To conduct applied research and development
  • To provide expert professional services in the form of consultancy and services to industry, community, government and other organizations

2.    TEACHING AND LEARNING

The department of Petroleum Science and Engineering offers 2 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate programs namely

  • BSc. in Petroleum Geology
  • BSc. in Petroleum Engineering
  • MSc. in Petroleum Geology
  • MSc. in Petroleum Engineering

2.1 Petroleum Geology

The Petroleum Geologist duty is to discover, locate and quantify oil and natural gas in sediments or reservoirs. They also work side-by-side with engineers.

3. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The department is actively involved in research and development projects funded by companies, national and international organizations, etc. Research areas include: Basin and petroleum system modelling, geochemical characterization of source rocks, tectono-sedimentary development studies from cores, outcrops and seismic data, Helium Exploration, Enhanced oil recovery, multiphase flow, drilling mud analysis, wellbore stability analysis, energy efficient technologies, environmental risks related to discharges of oil and chemicals, kinetics of hydrate, wax and asphaltene precipitation.

4.  CONSULTANCY AND SERVICES

Consultancy and services is coordinated through BICO.

Laboratories

The department’s Laboratories has   state of the art equipment for core and petroleum fluids analysis at room and elevated temperatures. It boasts of ultramodern rheology and contact angle measuring equipment. Our operations conform to international safety and quality standards. The equipment are calibrated at regular intervals as per        manufacturers

Petroleum Engineering

Graduates of this program are expected to be able to evaluate potential oil and gas reservoirs, design wells and oversee drilling activities, select and implement recovery schemes, design surface collection and treatment facilities

Porosity and Permeability

Major Ongoing Research Projects

  • Helium research collaboration with Durham and Oxford University in UK
  • EnPE and ANTHEI project in collaboration with Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway
