Thesis Abstract

This study aimed at investigating teachers’ knowledge and attitude towards the provision of Sexual and Reproductive Health Education (SRHE) to secondary school learners with deafness in Tanzania; specifically looking at teachers’ knowledge, practices and attitudes. It was guided by four research objectives. The first objective sought to explore secondary school teachers’ SRHE knowledge on methods used in teaching learners with deafness. The second examined teachers’ pedagogical practices in teaching SRHE to learners with deafness. The third assessed the availability of resources used in teaching SRHE to learners with deafness. The fourth examined the attitudes of secondary school teachers towards teaching SRHE to learners with deafness. A concurrent mixed method research approach was used. Purposive sampling was employed to select regions, schools and respondents. Six regions; Iringa, Kilimanjaro, Mtwara, Mwanza, Tabora and Tanga were selected for this study. About 30 Biology and Civics teachers and 248 secondary school learners with deafness from seven secondary schools participated in this study. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, Focus Group Discussions and observations. The findings indicate that teachers had low knowledge on SRHE with the mean score of 32.96. Lectures and songs which discriminate learners with deafness were commonly used. Real objects and human genitalia models were not available in all the participating schools. The attitude of teachers towards teaching SRHE to learners with deafness was negative with the mean score of 37.83. Teachers’ age (p = .032), sex (p = .000) and teaching experience (p = .001) were statistically significance in relation to attitude towards SRHE. Kruskal–Wallis Tests showed no statistical differences on socio-demographic factors in relation to attitude, age (p = .252), sex (p = .778), teaching experience (p = .67), levels of education (p = .185) and religion (p = .884). The study concludes that, teaching of SRHE to learners with deafness needs teachers who are knowledgeable in both SRHE content and teaching pedagogies and have a positive attitude towards SRHE and learners with deafness. The study recommends provision of pre and in-service training to equip teachers with current teaching and learning pedagogies. Furthermore, it recommends to the Ministries of Education Science and Technology and President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government to ensure the availability of sign language interpreters and the needed resources for both training teachers and teaching and learning activities.
