University of Bradford offers honorary degree to Prof. Ichumbaki for impactful research, community engagement

The University of Dar es Salaam scholar, Elgidius Edgar Bwinabona Ichumbaki has received an Honorary Degree, Honoris Causa, of Doctor of the University of Bradford, United Kingdom.

Ichumbaki, an Associate Professor in the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, College of Humanities and the President of Pan-African Archaeological Association, received the accolade on 4th December 2024, during the graduation ceremony held in the Great Hall at the University of Bradford (UoB).

This prestigious award from UoB is recognition of Professor Ichumbaki's significant impact as one of the most influential archaeologists and heritage scholars based and working in Africa. UoB highlights Ichumbaki’s dedication to archaeology, heritage and culture to enhance local pride, decolonise research and build community futures.

“It would be an honour to recognise your inspirational career as one of the most influential archaeologists and heritage scholars working in Africa. You emulate values of excellence, innovation, and inclusion through your research and approach to public engagement”, reads part of the citation by the UoB Vice Chancellor, Professor Shirley Congdon, of Professor Ichumbaki.

Professor Shirley also acclaimed Ichumbaki's innovative methods for engaging young people through music, a venture UoB was delighted to be part of.

The UoB honorary award to UDSM Archaeologist, Professor Ichumbaki, also a Visiting Professor in the School of Archaeology of University College Dublin, Ireland, and Adjunct Professor in the College of Culture and Sports of Korea University, South Korea, is a testimony to his ongoing commitment in broadening the horizon and influence of his works, which have inspired many individuals within and beyond the academic community.

Speaking to academic staff, students, graduates and the relatives attending the graduation ceremony, Professor Ichumbaki thanked the UoB for recognising his contribution to academia and the community. He also advised the graduates to use the knowledge they got from the UoB to transform communities’ lives and build futures.

A testament of academic excellence

Meanwhile, UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, congratulated Prof. Ichumbaki, emphasising the significance of this achievement. “Prof. Ichumbaki’s recognition by the University of Bradford is a testament to his academic excellence and commitment to advancing knowledge in archaeology and cultural heritage”.

Prof Anangisye further said: “This honour also reflects the caliber of scholarship nurtured at the University of Dar es Salaam. We are immensely proud of him”.

Professor Ichumbaki has implemented community-based research and heritage recording programmes in Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ireland, Comoros and in the UK. He has also empowered marginalised societies in Tanzania through establishment of community enterprises in Bagamoyo and Kilwa to make local people benefit from their important heritage sites.

The UoB recognition of Professor Ichumbaki’s work complements many other awards he has previously received. In 2018 and 2021, the University of Dar es Salaam recognised Professor Ichumbaki as one of the top three scholars whose research projects are remarkable with societal impact.
