The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is celebrating the appointment of Dr. Fatma Mohamed, Head of the Department of Structural and Construction Engineering, to the Council of Engineers on the Energy Transition (CEET).
This esteemed appointment, announced by CEET recently, places Dr. Fatma alongside a select group of global experts who will advise the United Nations Secretary-General, from June 2023 to May, 2024 on achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“Your participation in this Council would greatly advance the worldwide path to decarbonization, and we would be honored to have you join,” explained the appointment letter co-signed by Gerd Muller, the Director General of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Jeffrey D. Sachs, the President of UN Sustainable Development Solutions (SDSN).
Dr. Fatma's appointment to the CEET is a testament to UDSM’s outstanding contribution in the field of engineering and energy systems. With a focus on architectural conservation, sustainable materials, and urban design, Dr. Fatma has made significant strides in connecting creativity and innovation from around the world.
Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, expressed the university's joy at having one of its staff members appointed to such a distinguished international board.
“The University of Dar es Salaam is immensely proud of Dr. Fatma's appointment, which recognizes her remarkable achievements and affirms our commitment to excellence. She is actually flying high our national flag," said Prof. Anangisye.
The CEET, operating under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General, aims to form a diverse and high-level body of engineers and energy systems experts. This council will contribute to the Secretary-General's goal of building a global coalition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, it will support the United Nations in developing engineering pathways to attain worldwide decarbonization objectives by the mid-century mark.
As Dr. Fatma embarks on this new role, she joins a select group of experts who will shape the global energy transition and advocate for engineering solutions to tackle climate challenges.
Expressing her gratitude, Dr. Fatma said she was humbled and thankful for getting an opportunity to serve in a global platform to discharge her duties and responsibilities to bring change for a sustainable future.
With her impressive academic background, including a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Building Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, a Master's degree in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, Dr. Fatma brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role.
Dr. Fatma's appointment reflects the international recognition of UDSM's academic expertise and its dedication to addressing climate change and sustainable development goals. With her expertise and dedication, she will undoubtedly make invaluable contributions to the CEET's mission.
