The University of Dar es Salaam community has expressed its gratitude and pride to its alumni, Dr. Faustine Ndugulile and academic staff, Dr. Gladness Salema, for their nominations to hold prestigious positions in the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the East Africa Legislation Assembly (EALA), respectively.

The nomination of the two proud UDSM alumni, coincidentally, happened within ten days between 27th August and 5^th September 2024. UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye congratulated the two experts, and said that their nomination was a ‘testament of the unwavering trust Tanzania, Africa and the World have to the University of Dar es Salaam”.

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, a Tanzania Member of Parliament for Kigamboni Constituency and former Deputy Minister for Health was nominated as the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Regional Director for Africa on 27 August, 2024 at the session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo.

He studied two degrees at the University of Dar es Salaam namely Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Medicine (MMED) and graduated in 1997 and 2001, respectively. He further pursued and graduated with a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2010 at the University of Western Cape in South Africa and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2022 at the Open University of Tanzania.

Dr. Gladness Salema, a Senior Lecturer in the University of Dar es Salaam Business School and Head, Department of Quality Assurance in Support Services at UDSM, was elected a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to represent Tanzania, in the election held at the Tanzania National Assembly on 5 September, 2024 in Dodoma.

She holds two Masters Degrees from the University of Dar es Salaam namely Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Health (MPH).

Also, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA); a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health Procurement and Supply Chain Management from Empower School of Health & Kent State University; and a PhD in Logistics from Molde University College, Norway.

Rich education background and vast experience

UDSM Deputy Vice Chancellor-Academic, Prof. Bonaventure Rutinwa said that Dr Ndugulile and Dr. Salema’s rich education background, hardworking character and vast experience qualified them to be entrusted to these key posts in the respective esteemed international bodies namely WHO and EALA.

Meanwhile, many colleagues have congratulated Dr. Ndugulile and Dr Salema for “the well-deserved appointments” and were optimistic that they would excel in the new roles given their keen interest, exposure, experience and knowledge in their respective disciplines.

“Congratulations to Dr. Ndugulile and Dr. Salema on their elections; and we can all bear testimony to their great works in the respective area, locally and internationally; I wish them all the best in their new roles” said, Dr. Augustina Clara Alexander, UDSM Director of Internationalization, Convocation, and Advancement (DICA).

When given an opportunity to thank the Members of Parliament for electing her to the EALA position Dr. Salema thanked the University of Dar es Salaam for equipping her with relevant education and work experience that moulded her for leadership and public service.

“I am very grateful to my employer, the University of Dar es Salaam, for shaping me to become who I am today. More importantly, I sincerely thank the University of Dar es Salaam Vice Chancellor, Prof. William Anangisye, for trusting me to serve in the University Quality Assurance Unit and other positions”, said Dr. Salema.
