The University of Dar es Salaam scholar, Dr. Samwel Mchele Limbu has been appointed a permanent member of the East African Community Research and Development Working Group (RDWG) of the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), effective from September, 2023.
According to the information from Dr. Sylvance Okoth, the EASTECO Executive Secretary, Dr. Limbu was nominated by Tanzania to be a permanent member of the RDWG, and that the appointment is for the term of three years, renewable once.
“RDWG is the general assembly of R&D stakeholders in the region. The responsibilities of the working group are to stimulate dialogue among R&D stakeholders; promote partnerships within the research community including the government, civil society, the public and the private sector”, stated the information.
The appointment information further explained that RDWG advises the commission on collaborative multidisciplinary research priorities; promote dissemination of research outputs; and ensure mobilisation of resources to support R&D in the region.
The information further explained that, to undertake such responsibilities, the EAC Research and Development Management Framework has provided that each EAC Partner State nominates eight permanent members to the RDWG, which works to effectively coordinate projects and programmes under the department of Scientific Research and Development (SRD) of EASTECO.
Meanwhile, UDSM Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor-Research, Prof. Nelson Boniface congratulated Dr. Limbu on the prestigious appointment, which offers an instrumental position for him to not only represent the University but also Tanzania at large in the areas of research and development in the region.
A senior lecturer, prolific and conscious aquaculture scholar
Dr. Limbu is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Aquaculture Technology at UDSM School of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Technology (SoAF). He also serves as an Academic Editor (Chief Editor) of the Journal of Applied Aquaculture published by Taylor & Francis, since October 2022.
Dr. Limbu is a prolific and conscious aquaculture scholar who has researched extensively in the areas of aquaculture nutrition, aquaculture production, aquaculture water quality parameters and environmental health.
He is also a Review Editor of Frontiers in Aquaculture - Production Biology, Frontiers in Tropical Diseases - Antimicrobial Resistance and Frontiers in Animal Science and Production - Product Quality; and Internal Editor of the Tanzania Journal of Science.
Dr. Limbu has received this news with gratitude and honor to his department and the University of Dar es Salaam at large. “This appointment is one of the most prestigious ones, and a great privilege. It shows great honour and appreciation conferred to me, the department of Aquaculture Technology, and the University of Dar es Salaam on the research aspects in the region”.
