In a notable turn of events, the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) witnessed a historic students’ government (DARUSO) election that introduced the first-ever female presidential candidate Ms. Alice Erasto, who contested aggressively and missed a few points to the victory line.

In the election that will forever be etched in the annals of the institution's history, which commenced in early May and was concluded end of the same month, in 2023, Ms. Erasto’s support and competitive fierceness signaled a new era of inclusivity and progress.

Many UDSM students who participated in this election stated that, although Mr. Hamis Hamis Seif emerged as the ultimate victor, the remarkable display of maturity and capability by Ms. Alice Erasto showcased the immense potential of women leaders.

The information from DARUSO Electoral Commission indicated that, Mr. Hamis emerged victorious as the newly elected president by securing 2556 votes, while Ms. Alice garnered impressive 2189 votes, thus marking a difference of only 367 votes between the two.

Many have also commended the manner the election was conducted, and the way it underscored the significant strides made by women in the realm of student politics as well as how it offered an opportunity for female students to demonstrate their exceptional capabilities.

The race for the Vice President position was equally intense with Ms. Galeba Belinda securing a resounding victory by amassing 2576 votes. Not far behind, Ms. Tillya Vaileth received 2154 votes – further solidifying the strength and competence of female candidates in the election.

Prof. Bernadeta Killian, the Deputy Vice Chancellor-Planning, Finance, and Administration, conveyed heartfelt congratulations to the winners, acknowledging their outstanding achievements and unwavering dedication exhibited throughout the campaign.

In a powerful show of support for gender equality, Prof. Killian commended all the female candidates for setting “a high standard” and urged them to sustain their spirit and enthusiasm.

“I congratulate all the female candidates who participated in the election. Your courage, determination, and contributions are highly regarded. We encourage you to continue your remarkable efforts and uphold the spirit of progress and inclusivity”, said Prof. Killian.

As the dust settles on this historic election, both students and faculty eagerly anticipate the future contributions of the newly elected student government. It is hoped that their tenure will bring forth positive developments, bridging gaps, and further empowering the student body at the University of Dar es Salaam.

Mr. Mtoto Ibrahim, the Chairperson of the electoral committee, emphasized the importance of unity following the conclusion of the election. He called upon all students to set aside their differences and rally together as a united DARUSO, with collective efforts to enhance the university experience and promote positive change.
