Journalism First year course synopsis

JO 102:          INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM

The course touches on the historical development of journalism from the sentinels to the satellite. It describes how human and technological development through various phases changes the roles and functions of journalism to what the profession is today. The course helps students to examine, engineering, etc. Lastly, the course introduces the students to the overall practices of journalism, with particular attention to Tanzania and East Africa.


JO 103:         INTRODUCTION TO WRITING FOR THE MEDIA

The course will introduce students to the definition of news, news values, news gathering techniques, news sources, components of news and news writing techniques.  The course will also touch on feature writing.


JO 104:  JOURNALISM HISTORY AND ISSUES

The course will enable students to analyze issues and trends that have shaped operations of the media on one hand, and how these have impacted on the other.  The course will specifically digest political, economic, social as well as technological issues that have had a bearing on both media and societal development.


JO 106:  MEDIA ETHICS

The objective of the course is to enable students explore theoretical and practical ethical questions of importance to journalists individually and in public.  The course also aims at equipping journalists with tools for rational as well as ethical decision making.


JO 108: RADIO BROADCASTING

This course familiarizes students with Radio Broadcasting and exposes them to the history of radio, strengths and weaknesses of radio, programmes production, sources of news and radio news.

At the end of the course, students should be able to:Produce programmes of talk, interview, discussion, magazine and music

  1. Write and present radio news
  2. Participate in outside Broadcasting
  3. Use mixing console
  4. Use different types of microphones
  5. Use professional audio recorders 

JO 109:  TELEVISION PRODUCTION

The course will expose students to the basic knowledge of the nature of Television Production, the camera and it’s operations, light and audio techniques


JS 100:  KISWAHILI FOR THE MEDIA

This course is envisaged to equip students with necessary Kiswahili language skills that will enable them to have competence in both spoken and written forms


DS 101:   DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVES I

This course focuses on development theoretical perspectives. There are no prerequisites.

Course Objectives

  • Students will understand different development theories, discourses, African struggles for development and struggles against external forces.
  • Students will understand and acquire knowledge and skills for analysing development processes and problems.
  • Students will be imparted with the knowledge of good and responsible citizenship as well as good leadership.

JE 100:  ENGLISH FOR THE MEDIA

This one semester course is intended to equip students with English language skills which will enable them to pursue courses relating to the mass media and to have competence in English which is a vital tool for their careers
