Rose J. Masalu has been exposed to different scientific disciplines related to biochemistry.  The primary focus of her research effort has been the exploration diverse products/extracts of both terrestrial/marine fungi and plants in order to resolve societal grand challenges particularly in the human healthy and environment. Her current research interests include characterization of bioactive compounds with antiviral and anticancer potentials especially in the induction of apoptosis from both plants and fungi. Interests are in the functional genomics which include the “omics” technologies (transcriptomics, genomics and proteomics) to identify the underlying molecular basis of many common diseases including cancer and Viral diseases

Her research endeavors primarily revolve around exploring a diverse range of products and extracts derived from both terrestrial and marine fungi as well as plants, with the aim of addressing significant societal challenges, particularly in human health and environmental sustainability. Her current research interests are centered on the characterization of bioactive compounds possessing antiviral and anticancer properties, notably focusing on their ability to induce apoptosis in cellular systems. Furthermore, she is keenly interested in functional genomics, employing various "omics" technologies such as transcriptomics, genomics, and proteomics, to decipher the molecular underpinnings of common diseases, including cancer and viral infections.
