In the period of six years from 2021 to 2026, the project will have the following activities:
PhD Curriculum
The taught PhD programme which was developed in 2015 was reviewed under the support of this project in April 2021 and already approved by TCU. It is a four years programme with year one for coursework and other three years for research.
PhD Training
One of the main activities of the project is PhD training. This project is sponsoring six (6) PhD students started their studies at the end of October 2021. Out of six (6) PhD students, four (4) students are in Mathematics programme namely
1. Abdul-Rahman Japhary Mumbu (M)
2. Elimercy Eustace Ntagalinda (F)
3. Innocent Turlo Sosoma (M)
4. Qwaray, Leonce Leandry (M)
Other two (2) students are in Mathematics Education programme who are:
5, Ema Boki (F)
6. Honorata Kihaga (F)
The working plan of PhD training is as follow:
All 6 PhD students are expected to complete their studies in September 2025.
Mobility
This project will have three types of mobility. The first one involves teaching. During the teaching of PhD programme, the project will support staff from the University of Makerere to go and teach at the University of Dar es Salaam and verse versa. The second type of mobility will require PhD students sponsored by the project to visit their external supervisors in Norway or in the region during research period. The final type of mobility will involve supporting staff and students to attend conferences or workshops.
Conferences and Workshops
This project will support the following conferences/workshops activities:
Outreach Activities
The project will have three types of outreach activities.
ACTIVITIES DONE BY 2022
Visiting Lecturers:
Three visiting lecturers visited and taught three courses at the Department.
LOCAL WORKSHOP: Linking Mathematics Research Industries and Government Institutions: 27th -28th May, 2022
The workshop brought together 63 participants. The main objective of the workshop was to bring collaborations between industry and mathematics researchers to work on real life problems.
These included staff members, PhD students, staff from other government institutions, and government agencies such as the Tanzania Meteorological Agency, Tanzania Bureau of Standards and Ifakara Health Institute.
The PhD students participated and some gave some presentations.
PhD STUDENTS’ PROGRESS
July 2022: End of coursework for PhD students.
December 2022: Completed the written part of the comprehensive examination
Training Manual Preparation
Two types of manuals were prepared: |
||||
1. |
Type I: Integration of mathematical software in teaching mathematics in Tanzania. |
|||
2. |
Type II: The role of teacher characteristics in enhancing students’ interest and motivation in mathematics as a subject. |
|||

Teacher training: 29 August to 3rd September 2022 |
|||
1. |
First training took place at Morogoro. It was jointly organized with Mathematical Association of Tanzania (MAT) and took place during the week for the Annual seminar of MAT. About 130 teachers were in attendance. MATH4SDG partially supported the participants (mainly secondary school teachers) and facilitators. The training involved: |
|||
|
i. |
Use of mathematical software (Maple and Geogebra) in teaching and learning. |
||
|
ii. |
The second training will be on the effect of teacher characteristics in teaching and learning. |
||
2. |
School visits in Mwanza region |
|||
|
A total of eight schools were visited. The main objective of the school visits was enhancement of students’ interest and motivation in science and mathematics in Mwanza region in Tanzania. This was among the first regions to be visited. More such visits are planned in 2023. Performance in Mathematics is always the lowest compared to other subjects (with an average of 20% pass). |
