The Chemistry Department was founded in 1965 together with the Faculty of Science, currently College of Natural and Applied Sciences. It is the most highly ranked chemistry academic institution in Tanzania. It was created with the vision of becoming a premier Chemistry department for global development needs through dynamic knowledge creation and application.
The core activities of the department are: teaching, research, public services and consultancy. With more than 25 PhD holders among its staff the Department enjoys a health teaching, research and consultancy programs that covers many of the major areas of chemistry and applied sciences in particular, agriculture, environmental, analytical, industrial, inorganic, organic, physical, natural products, biochemical, quality assurance and materials science. The Chemistry Department is strongly linked to many Tanzania industries and government departments through its graduates who are employed in these institutions.
