The Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) is an academic unit in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences engaged in teaching, research and consultancy in the fields of Applied Microbiology, Molecular Biology
and Biotechnology. It started in 1987 as Applied Microbiology Unit (AMU) under the Botany Department and became full-fledged department in 2005 in order to expand teaching and research to conform to the strategy of promoting marketable academic programs that are science and technology-based.
The vision of the department is to become a reputable academic unit at UDSM that excels in creating and imparting high quality knowledge in the fields of Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology responsive to national, regional and international needs.
The motto of MBB is: “Molecular Biology and Biotechnology for Bevelopment in the 21st Bentury.
