Dr Kivinge from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in the College of
Humanities represented the whole African continent in an International Conference in Beijing
which brought together scholars from across the Globe to discuss about the place of religion in
the changing world. He was the only one from Africa.
The conference which took place on 23 rd September, 2023 in Beijing-China was co-organized by
the Institute of World Religions of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Chinese
Association of Religious Studies. The theme of the conference was “The Changing World and
Religious Studies.” Many topics were presented by distinguished scholars in religious studies
from universities such as the University of Cambridge-UK, Peking University-China, Jawaharlal
Nehru University-India, Bhikshu University-Sri Lanka, Dongguk University-South Korea, to
mention but a few. The topics included: Religion and Ethics, Religion and the Environment,
Religion, Science and Technology, Religion and International Peace, Religion and Development,
Religion and Public Policy, etc.
Dr Kivinge presented on the Role of African Religion in Enhancing Morality in Africa Today.
Given the uniqueness of the topic, his presentation caught participants’ and hosts’ attention.
They were very impressed and expressed interest to visit the College of Humanities and the
Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. They also
expressed interest in academic collaboration with the Department of Philosophy and Religious
Studies.
