Philosophy and Religious Studies

In most universities in the world and in the region, philosophical studies are considered of central importance, and strong programmes in philosophy have been developed to maintain this tradition of analytical reasoning. Philosophy can help to examine the most fundamental nature of humanity and thus direct the individual and society. It is possible to explain much of human nature and interaction through philosophical discourse and enquiry.

Philosophical studies are needed in order to understand and cope with the rapidly changing world around us. Learning critical analysis and systematic argumentation is essential as Tanzania and Africa at large are going through significant economic, political, social, and environmental changes and are facing new challenges. Citizens’ ability for independent thinking and logical reasoning and understanding of issues of morality, ethics, and values is essential for building impartial, democratic, and just societies. In the age of globalization that has increased the interaction between very different cultures and worldviews, it is important to learn to understand these differences in a rational manner that helps

us to see ‘the two sides of the coin.’ Studies in philosophy provide students with the foundation for reflective thinking, insightful analysis, and balanced evaluation of matters not only in science and academics but also in various other fields of social and professional life.

The social relevance of philosophy is currently increasing across Africa. The African transformation process calls for philosophical analysis of current patterns of thought and ideological and economic systems in order to find solutions that best fit the African circumstances.
