Preamble
We thank you for your interest in courses offered by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
Our Department, situated in the College of Humanities, is one of the vibrant Departments in the University of Dar es Salaam. It was established to address training and research needs related to the archaeology and heritage in 1985 as an Archaeology Unit under the Department of History. It later gained Departmental status, but linked with History, thus forming the Department of History and Archaeology. Few years later in 2013 it was established as a Department in its own right, that is the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
As you probably know, Tanzania is endowed with plenty of cultural heritage resources ranging from paleontological, archaeological and architectural sites to ethnographical heritage. The heritage resources contribute to understanding how we (humans), our environments and other creatures on earth came to be what we/they are today. Heritage resources also contribute to the economy and development of society. However, for heritage resource’s potentials to be realized, they need to be uncovered,
documented, interpreted, conserved, developed and managed properly. Our Department addresses these issues through training manpower, conducting high quality research and providing public services and consultancy in archaeology and heritage fields.
This orientation booklet provides you with a brief information about our Department. We believe that it will assist you to familiarize with Our Department and its courses and activities. Please obtain more information from University Prospectus and from Department Website/page:
