Challenges of Urbanization and Development in Africa in the Context of Climate Change

International Conference on Challenges of Urbanization and Development in Africa in the Context of Climate Change held at Mt. Meru Hotel – Arusha, Tanzania from 24th – 26th July 2013

The conference was organised by the Centre for Climate Change Studies (CCCS) of the University of Dar es Salaam, in collaboration with The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), The Ardhi University of Tanzania (ARU) and International START Secretariat based in Washington D.C. The conference aimed at improving understanding of challenges related to urbanization in the context of climate change, and devise strategies viable to prepare for and manage the multitude of risks associated with environmental and climate change in African cities. The conference was attended by one hundred and eighty (180) participants including scientists, researchers, educators, young scientists, policy makers, urban planners, government officials, development practitioners, media, representatives from donor and community-based organizations and other stakeholders who shared their experiences and knowledge and considered synergistic actions to foster future research and actions. The conference enabled participants to learn and share relevant experiences from different parts of the world.
