Professorial Inaugural Lecture on States, Markets, and Institutional Failure: Lessons from the Induced Birth, Tortured Life, and Painful Death of MV. Bukoba

This is to inform the University of Dar es Salaam community and the general public that Prof. Rwekaza Sympho Mukandala, from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, College of Social Sciences (CoSS), will deliver his Professorial Inaugural Lecture on States, Markets, and Institutional Failure: Lessons from the Induced Birth, Tortured Life, and Painful Death of MV. Bukoba on Tuesday 21st May 2024 from 14:00hours at Nkrumah Hall, University of Dar es Salaam.

Prof. Mukandala is a dedicated scholar, researcher, educator and leader working particularly in the areas of Public Administration, Comparative Politics, and Democratic Governance. His professorial inaugural lecture will be delivered on the 28th anniversary of the sinking of MV. Bukoba. Commissioned on 27th July 1979 by President Julius Kambarage Nyerere, she started her last voyage from Bukoba Port on 20th May, 1996. She capsized between 07:35 and 07:40 am on 21st May as she approached the Gulf of Mwanza and eventually sank at 15:05 pm on the same day. According to H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa, Third President of the United Republic of Tanzania it was at that time the worst tragedy to happen in the country's history. Conflicting claims and counter claims abound regarding the cause of the accident.

Prof. Mukandala deploys a multi-disciplinary historical approach, ranging from physics to political science, law and economics, to explore the key contributory factors to what it is concluded was the induced birth, tortured life and painful death of MV. Bukoba. Finally, important lessons are drawn for the present and future.
