Biography

Valerian Kwigizile is a Professor of Civil and Construction Engineering and Associate Director of the Transportation Research Center for Livable Communities (TRCLC) at Western Michigan University (WMU), USA. Prior to joining WMU, he was an Assistant Professor at West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

His academic and professional work focuses on transportation engineering, with particular attention to motorized and non-motorized traffic safety, transportation planning, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), statistical applications in transportation engineering, public transportation, and traffic enforcement.

Prof. Kwigizile has secured external research funding from various agencies, including the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP), and the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).

He has authored and co-authored more than 120 research papers published in national and international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He has also authored and co-authored more than 25 research project reports.

Teaching and Graduate Supervision

Prof. Kwigizile teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including transportation engineering, highway design, travel demand analysis, traffic operations and management, transportation economics, traffic safety engineering, and public transportation.

He has supervised numerous PhD dissertations and master’s theses, as well as undergraduate capstone design projects.

Professional Memberships and Recognition

Prof. Kwigizile is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) with over 25 years of industrial and academic experience.

He is also a member of the United States Transportation Research Board (TRB) standing committee on pedestrians, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
