Application Instructions

Welcome postgraduate applicants! We are pleased that you are applying for admission to the University of Dar es Salaam Directorate of Postgraduate Studies. Admission to postgraduate academic programs is competitive and students are selected on the basis of their academic preparation, ability, and program fit.

International applicants have an additional application material requirement.

The Directorate of Postgraduate Studies relies mainly on email to communicate with all applicants. Therefore, please include a current email address on your application and be sure to promptly respond to all correspondence.

Required materials for applicants typically include
  1. Online application form
  2. Application fee
  3. Academic transcripts and certificates
  4. All certification and transcripts must be uploaded to your application in order for it to be reviewed. Please do not mail transcripts as part of the application. We do not accept mailed documents.
  5. Current letters of recommendation
  6. Statement of purpose/concept note

For international applicants, they are required to submit their recognition of foreign awards certificate from the Tanzania Commission for Universities (https://faas.tcu.go.tz ) for them to proceed with their studies.

The minimum requirements are:
Postgraduate Diploma

A person should have at least a bachelor degree, advanced diploma or its equivalent from a recognised higher learning institution. Candidates with equivalent qualifications must also possess at least Secondary School Certificates with credit passes.

Master Degree
  1. A bachelor’s degree completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited/recognized institution.
  2. An average GPA of 2.7 or its equivalent for Masters programmes by coursework and dissertation and GPA of 3.5 for Masters programmes by thesis.
  3. Applicants who hold unclassified degrees (e.g., B.V. Sc., M.D., etc.) should have at least a B grade average in the subject of the intended Masters. Candidates with Pass degrees will also be considered if:
    1. Their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a ‘B’ grade or higher; and
    2. They have satisfied the relevant School/College/Institute that they have exhibited potential through subsequent research experience and/or additional training.
  4. An Advanced Diploma from a recognised higher learning institution with a minimum of an upper second class plus Postgraduate Diploma and Secondary School Certificates.
  5. A recognised professional qualification (CPA, CSP, ACCA, CA, CIB, MCIM, CMA certificate) plus Secondary School Certificates.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

The University of Dar es Salaam offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree programme either by thesis or by coursework and dissertation. Applicants must have a good relevant Master degree from the University of Dar es Salaam or any other University recognised by TCU.

Along with these minimal requirements, admission decisions are based on a number of factors, including academic degrees and record, written statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and relevant work and research experience. All admission recommendations are made by each individual department.

Applications for admission to the UDSM Directorate of Postgraduate Studies are submitted via the online admission application (https://admissions.udsm.ac.tz). All required materials listed above should be submitted according to the instructions provided. Your application will not be reviewed until you have submitted your application and we have received your application fee. You must submit your application and payment by the specified deadline in order for your application to be reviewed. By submitting an application to UDSM, you grant consent to university staff to obtain any additional or missing information as needed.

The online system for application will be open for three intakes as follows:

  1. March Intake: applicants may choose for only programmes offered in March or any programme offered by thesis.
  2. July Intake: this is specific for only two programmes at UDBS and UDSoL, namely, Master of Business Administration (Evening) and Master of Intellectual Property.
  3. October Intake: this is for all programmes except for those offered in March by coursework and dissertation. The procedures for application are available on the university website.

Applications typically open through the admission portal. International applicants must pay attention to the deadlines

Completed applications and application fees (non-refundable) must be submitted before the programme’s application deadline. The application and payment portal close at 11:59pm East African Time on the posted deadline date. Applications will not be accepted for review or consideration after the posted deadline has passed. International applicants should apply early to allow sufficient time for financial and visa document preparation.

A non-refundable TZS 50,000 application fee for Tanzanian applicants/$50 application fee for Non-Tanzanian applicants is required for the programme to which you apply.

  1. All applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee. The fee should be paid and a receipt uploaded during online application except for foreigners who will effect payment during registration.
  2. The fees will be revised from time to time as the need arises. Information on the fees applicable for any given year is obtainable from the College/School/Institute Principals/Deans/Directors, the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the University Prospectus.

Applicants can pay their application fee one of two ways:

  1. Mobile Money Services i.e. Mpesa, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money. Applicants shall request control number online that shall be sent directly to their preferred cellphone number. They shall proceed to use the reference number shown to pay application fee.
  2. Banks: International students application fee is payable using the SWIFT code: NLCBTZTX through A/C Number: 012105005554, University of Dar es Salaam, NBC Bank, Samora Branch.

Payment procedures of application fee for local students using mobile money services are detailed below:

Vodacom Number

  1. Open your mpesa by dialling *150*00#
  2. Then choose 4: Pay by M-Pesa (Lipa kwa Mpesa)
  3. Then choose 5: Government Payment (Malipo ya Serikali)
  4. Then choose 1: Reference Number (Weka namba ya kumbukumbu)
  5. Enter the Reference number( Ingiza number ya kumbukumbu ya malipo): 99143XXXXXX

Tigo Number

  1. Open your Tigo-Pesa Number dialling *150*01#
  2. Choose 4: PAY bill/(LIPA Bili,)
  3. Choose 5: Malipo ya Serikali
  4. Enter Reference number/(Tafadhali ingiza namba ya malipo): 99143XXXXXX

Airtel Number

  1. Airtel Money Number dialling *150*60#
  2. Choose 5: (Lipia bili)

NB: Reference number should be taken from your admission system account at ‘the make payment’ button which is shown in red colour: eg. Reference no 99143XXXXXX After payment, the system will automatically update and allow you to proceed to step3
