Biography

Dr. Egbert Emmanuel Mkoko brings over 25 years of extensive experience in broadcast journalism to his roles as a lecturer and the Research and Knowledge Exchange Coordinator at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC), University of Dar es Salaam. His expertise encompasses radio and TV production, scriptwriting, audio and visual editing, communication and media research, and media consultancy.

Dr. Mkoko commenced his professional journey in the early 2000s as a journalist with Radio Free Africa and Star TV. Following the completion of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Dar es Salaam in 2008, he joined the university as a Tutorial Assistant in 2009. He furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa (2011-2013). Subsequently, he earned his doctorate in Media Studies from Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 2021.

His areas of specialisation include Broadcast Journalism, News Production, Media Ethics, and Reception Theory. Notably, Dr. Mkoko’s doctoral research, titled ‘The Politics of News Production within Public Service Broadcasting: A Critical Analysis of Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC),’ had a tangible impact, prompting TBC to implement the ARIDHIO news production routine, replacing its former 8 am news bulletin.

In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Mkoko is actively involved in media consultancies. His work includes the preparation of communication strategies, development of research frameworks, curriculum design and review, training for journalists and communication experts, and Training of Trainers (ToT) programs, as well as audio/visual production. He has also participated in numerous international conferences, training sessions, and exchange programs in countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, South Africa, China, the USA, Germany, and the Netherlands, enriching his global perspective.
