By Beatrice Ngong'ho, CMU
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has strengthened its internationalization agenda following high-level discussions with Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania aimed at expanding student and staff mobility, advancing collaborative research, and unlocking new opportunities under the Erasmus+ Programme.
The strategic engagement brought together senior officials from both institutions to explore practical pathways for enhancing academic cooperation and creating more international learning opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Colman Titus Msoka, Director of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), led the UDSM delegation during discussions with KTU's leadership, including Vice-Rector for Education Dr. Kristina Ukvalbergiene, Director of International Relations Dr. Giedrė Šadeikaitė, and Head of the Academic Mobility Office Ms. Gintarė Vilbikienė.
At the centre of the discussions were efforts to strengthen institutional partnerships through expanded academic exchanges, joint research initiatives, knowledge-sharing programmes and increased participation in Erasmus+ mobility opportunities.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Msoka emphasized that international partnerships are becoming increasingly important in preparing universities to address global challenges while enhancing the quality of teaching, learning and research.
"International collaboration is no longer optional in higher education. It is essential for expanding knowledge, strengthening research capacity and exposing students and academic staff to diverse perspectives and global experiences," said Dr. Msoka.
He noted that UDSM remains committed to building strong partnerships with leading institutions around the world as part of its broader strategy to enhance academic excellence and international engagement.
The discussions also focused on identifying opportunities for increased mobility among students and staff, enabling participants from both institutions to benefit from international exposure, intercultural learning and collaborative academic experiences.
Officials from both universities expressed a shared commitment to creating more opportunities for students, researchers and lecturers to engage in global learning environments while contributing to innovative solutions to contemporary development challenges.
KTU Vice-Rector for Education, Dr. Kristina Ukvalbergiene, underscored the value of sustained academic partnerships in strengthening higher education institutions and fostering international knowledge exchange.
"Partnerships between universities create opportunities for innovation, cultural understanding and academic growth. Through collaboration, we can provide our students and researchers with experiences that prepare them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world," she said.
Joint research projects and collaborative academic initiatives
Beyond mobility programmes, the two institutions explored opportunities for joint research projects and collaborative academic initiatives that can address societal challenges through innovation and evidence-based solutions.
The meeting also provided a platform for exchanging experiences and best practices in higher education management, research development and internationalization strategies, reinforcing the role of universities as drivers of global knowledge creation.
As a symbol of the growing partnership, Dr. Msoka presented a commemorative University of Dar es Salaam scarf to KTU officials, reflecting the mutual respect and commitment shared by the two institutions.
In a parallel cultural diplomacy initiative, Ms. Beatrice Ngong'ho, Public Relations Officer from the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), presented gifts highlighting Tanzania's rich cultural heritage and tourism attractions.
The gesture showcased the importance of educational partnerships not only in advancing academic cooperation but also in promoting intercultural understanding and people-to-people connections.
"Educational partnerships go beyond classrooms and research laboratories. They create bridges between cultures, strengthen mutual understanding and foster lasting relationships among people and institutions," said Ms. Ngong'ho.
In this visit, both universities reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration through academic exchange programmes, research partnerships and international mobility initiatives.
The engagement marks a significant step in strengthening ties between UDSM and KTU while opening new opportunities for students, academic staff and researchers from both institutions.
As UDSM continues to expand its global footprint, partnerships such as the one with KTU are expected to play an important role in advancing research excellence, innovation and sustainable development through international cooperation.
