By Special Correspondent, CMU

As part of its commitment to outreach and youth empowerment, the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has visited Laurate School in Zanzibar and encouraged students to explore health-sector careers by joining UDSM which stands out as a top choice for aspiring professionals in the related fields.

In this visit, held during the ongoing Zanzibar Afya Week 2025, UDSM representatives engaged with form four and form five students at the school, offering them insights into academic and career pathways in health and science such as medicine, public health, biotechnology, and allied fields.

Ms. Zamda George, a Senior Public Relations from Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Mlimani Campus, told students about how UDSM was a legendary and multidisciplinary institution offering over 100 undergraduate programs across diverse fields.

She emphasized the university’s extensive geographical footprint, with campuses in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Dodoma, Mbeya, Iringa, and new campuses being developed in Kagera and Lindi.

The scientists from UDSM-MCHAS, Ms. Prudence Masanga further highlighted UDSM’s health-related academic offerings, especially from the Mbeya College of Health and Allied Sciences (UDSM-MCHAS), and relevant programs from the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS).

“I encourage you to explore health-sector careers through UDSM which stands out as a top choice for aspiring professionals in medicine, public health, biotechnology, and allied fields”, said Ms. Masanga.

Laurate School, known for its focus on academic excellence and character development, nurtures both Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students with a growing reputation for producing top-performing graduates.

The interactive session during this visit was even more engaging through live science demonstrations. Students were not only amazed by what they saw but also inspired by how science could be used to solve real-world problems.

Mr. Stephano Emmanuel, a laboratory technician from UDSM-MCHAS, conducted blood group testing—surprising many students who were unaware of their blood type. Meanwhile, Ms. Gloria Mabula, a Laboratory Scientist also from UDSM-MCHAS, guided students in observing live bacteria through a microscope.

This initiative was carried out in collaboration with The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), reflecting a joint commitment to expanding academic and health awareness.

The outreach sparked curiosity and excitement among students, many of whom expressed interest in pursuing further studies in health and science. It successfully blended information, inspiration, and hands-on learning, giving the students a tangible sense of what a future at UDSM could look like.
