Winifrida is a Lecturer at the Department of Zoology, College of Natural and Applied Science at University of Dar es Salaam. She has Strong education professional with a PhD focused in Tropical Medicine Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology from University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA . During her MSc studies at the University of Dar es Salaam (2002-2005), she was involved in collaborative research with Muhimbili University of Health Sciences (now MUHAS) and Ifakara Health Institute on the role of drug resistance markers in predicting clinical outcome in children under five years with non-severe malaria: the component of clinical trials to investigate the efficacy of Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine (SP) in Coastal region Tanzania. In 2009, she obtained Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Tropical Medicine. During the first two years at the University of Hawaii she investigated the role of intermittent preventive treatment during pregnancy using SP on antibodies levels to malarial antigens in pregnant women from Cameroon. She was later on involved in research on placental malaria-pathogenesis using both in vivo (human placentas) and in vitro (BeWo cell line) studies using both molecular and immunological assays. During her four-years- studies at the University of Hawaii (2009-2013) she obtained various awards including Delta Kappa Gamma Award (by International Educators USA), Achievement Award (by Department of Tropical Medicine, Hawaii) and Joseph Alicata Award (by Department of Tropical Medicine, University of Hawaii, and Manoa.
Winifrida does research in immunology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and control of Infectious diseases (Malaria, HIV, TB and Negleted Tropical diseases). She has also special interest on maternal and child health studies. Currently, Winifrida is teaching Immunology, Immunology of Parasitism, Parasitology and Molecular Biology of Parasites and supervises both postgraduate and undergraduate projects at the Department of Zoology University of Dar es Salaam .
