Rajabu A. Chipila is a lecturer and a linguist in the Department of Kiswahili Language and Linguistics at the Institute of Kiswahili Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam. He holds a PhD degree in African languages from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He also holds an M.A. Linguistics (Kiswahili and English) and a B.A. (Education – Kiswahili and English) degrees both from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He specializes in second language teaching and learning. His PhD was on native speakers’ motivation to study Kiswahili as an academic subject in Tanzanian universities. He also has an allegiance in language in education with a special focus on language policy and planning. He has researched and participated in various projects on language of instruction issues in Tanzania. Chipila is an experienced Kiswahili as a second/foreign language instructor in which, apart from teaching in various universities and colleges in his native Tanzania, he has also taught the language in South Korea and South Africa. Chipila is also an experienced Kiswahili and English languages translator and interpreter. He has also lectured in various local, regional, and international academic conferences, seminars, and workshops in countries like South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, China, South Korea, Norway, France, and Germany.
