Herbert Hambati holds a PhD in Disaster Management and Population Studies. He is a faculty member in the Department of Geography at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Trained as a Human Geographer and Environmental scientist, Prof. Herbert Hambati offers a qualitative perspective on human-environmental relations systems. He has published in the field, particularly related to disaster management, indigenous knowledge systems, rural and urban ecosystems management, climate change adaptations, human health, and environmental dynamics. His background in land use planning and environmental studies (BA), Geography and environmental management (MA), and disaster management science have propelled his current involvement in different research projects. His research is primarily on Disaster Risk Management, Population studies, Population Health, and Human-Environmental Dynamics. He is currently the principal investigator of two grants projects of five years: These are Everyday Humanitarianism in Tanzania (EHTZ) (In collaboration with Prof. Lisa Ann Richey of the University of Copenhagen, Business school-Denmark) and Explaining inclusive lower-level urbanization in Tanzania and Uganda (In collaboration with Prof. Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt, University of Lund – Sweden) respectively. He has accumulated research experience that contributes to building the capacity of young academic staff members at the Department of Geography and Population Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. He is currently the Coordinator of the Population Studies and Research Centre of the College of Social Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam and editor-in-chief of the Tanzanian Journal of Population Studies and Development hosted by the University of Dar es Salaam. He also serves as the chairman of the Edward Michaud Memorial Hospital board of directors based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
